BeetleDrive
For a better experience, use the executable version, web-version will have worse performance and missing ambiance.
Description:
A short atmospheric drive through an unkempt road up torwards an old lighthouse, explore the entire island on a classic '56 VW Beetle towing a retro tear-shaped camping trailer. What secrets may be lying around and in the coasts of beetle island?
Mechanics:
As a prototype, wasting time on a tutorial would be meaningless, things you may need to know:
- You wont be able to start the engine if the vehicle is moving too fast or the gear isnt in neutral, high rpm dead zone is also simulated
- Collisions with other objects deal damage and shut your engine down
- Dead trunks will deal damage at low speeds but only shut down your engine at an acceptable speed
- Trees and rocks will deal damage regardless, rocks more than trees
- Dead trunks respawn after some time if not over the player vehicle while unobserved (The quantum log theory)
- Other objects (Like the lighthouse or fences) have collision but no damage implemented
- Cars cant swim so perhaps try not to get stuck in the ocean
Controls:
- X: Engine
- W: Gas pedal
- S: Brake pedal
- A/D: Steer left/ right
- Spacebar: Handbrake
- Shift/Control: Gear up/down
- I: Interior light
- L: Headlights
- H: Horn
- 1, 2, 3: First, third, front camera
Technical details:
- Made in godot
- Map geometry procedurally created from heightmaps with a custom script (Isla Choros, Chile) and then sliced for performance with another
- Roads placed using a custom projection script (Model used was quite janky though)
- Objects (Rocks and Trees) procedurally placed using a custom multimesh generator script (What a headache)
- Vehicle gear system controlled via godot's vehicle system and a custom script that uses the real car's characteristics (Gear ratios, weight, drive, engine power, etc) and some math to try and match as closely as possible it's real counterpart (So close I had to change the trailer to a smaller one 'cause the 56 VW beetle couldnt pull an 800kg camper trailer, which was quite evident in retrospective)
- Map is around 1.5x1.5 kilometers (including seafloor, without its around 1x0.5km), initially used one of Isla de Pacua, Chile, but the file was too large to use the html5 build on itch.io, hence the moais around the map
Feedback, questions and ideas around the prototype (Driving mechanics, map, object interaction, ugly models, etc.) are welcome and encouraged.
